Up, Up & Away! Stephen's B-day Celebration!

Stephen Joseph Hafen celebrated his #1 birthday today! He was full of joy! He loved seeing all the balloons and he especially loved eating his first piece of bday cake. I created a hot air ballon cake (no pattern), just inspired by an embroidery that Dad (yes, Grandpa) made years ago that I have hung in Stephen's room. I can see why many Mom's have given in to the Costco special cakes. Wow, Thanks Mom for spending all of that time in the kitchen for so many years creating special designs for us. I did enjoy the experience, but a lot of little things went wrong. I didn't have the right size coupler for the cake decorating tools, so I had to improvise on my frosting idea. Since I had to do that, I had a lot of gaps in my ballon, so I thought sprinkles would fill in the space nicely. Little did I know that when I shook the cute little sprinkle container that the lid would fly off and scatter sprinkles everywhere! I just had to laugh. The main thing is that the cake tasted delicious and Stephen enjoyed every bite. I think he definitely experienced a little sugar high, it was too cute! I'll post a few pictures tonight that I took and then I'll see what pictures Ray imports and share those as well.

Happy Birthday SONSHINE Stephen! I love you my little one.

Thanks for posting all of those pictures Mari, it was so good to look back at his first year of life. He has given me new life.
Like you wrote in your poem, he truly is an "angel boy."

love,
Kary

Hey Kary!

Loved the pictures. Looked like you all had tons of fun. Great decorations. I loved the cake. You did great! One of the things I loved most about it was how Stephen was right there with Pooh and Tigger in the balloon. Very clever, creative, and cute.

One of these days hopefully I'll be able to celebrate something with you guys in person (rather than spirit).

Loads of love,
Tessa

Yo ho Tessa!
thanks for commenting. Great to hear from you. You know me and being craftsy...it doesn't come easy. So, attempting the cake was a huge undertaking for me, but I had fun. it reminded me of planning a sports day at O'Malley...remember those? You actually helped me decorate my last one there. So, I guess I went out in style. : ) Thanks for making me smile.

Come see us soon,
Kary

Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for the encouragement w/ my 'craftiness' skills. Speaking of crafts, let Emily know I would love to place an order w/ her to make a moose "The Hafen's" sign for our front porch. I have the snowman and it looks adorable, but I'd like the moose for summer time. I will pay her for her work. She is a super artist (wonder who she learned that from?) You taught your children well Cheryl. Keep creating joy!

hugs,
Kary

I'll talk to Emily about the Moose sign. She is amazing, but I'm not sure she got it from me. Have you decided what kind of quilt you want??

there is no rush on the moose sign. I know emily is way busy right now. thanks for mentioning it to her though

Remember the wall quilt you hung up at Kay's? I'm thinking something like that...an Alaskan scene...trees, a mountain, lake....maybe a moose? about the same size as Kay's. You are so sweet to offer, but you sound pretty busy too. Let me know if you are serious and we can talk fabric and cost. You are such a great addition to our family.
Are you still liking your ward? Bell choir?
love you sunshine sister!
