Happy Birthday Mindy!

We sure love you and think you are great! Hope you have a fantastic birthday!!

I will try and think up a poem for you. . .

Full of fun and laughter
Mindy loves to play
Not only sports
But with Ben everyday

Tall and cute she is
No one can deny
She went on to find
The world's greatest guy

She can block a shot
Knock you to the floor
Bruises she shows-off
As if she wanted more

Fun to be around
She is never frowning
She is just too happy
Working on her clowning

We love her, yes we do!
No one can compare
Mindy is a nifty girl
With her special Mindy flair!

Thank you, Thank you. I wrote that in five minutes! :-) Love you Mind!

Lots of love!

Three years ago we stepped off an airplane in California to begin our Law school journey. Mishap after mishap occurred causing much doubt about whether or not we were even suppose to be pursuing this course. We stuck to it, and 3 years later - we made it! Charles is a certified attorney!! 3 years ago I had my doubts about it. Not if he could do it - if we should do it. 8 years ago I did not comprehend one bit where our journey would take us! I stand amazed.

These pictures are of the lame car flop experience. That was how we began our journey, one trial after another. And so it is with life. . . the trick it to find joy in it anyway! To be able to laugh instead of cry. As Sister Hinckley (the prophets wife) said, "I prefer to laugh, crying gives me a headache!" I agree!!

Now we are starting on a new journey. It is just as exciting!

Thanks to you all for your support through love and prayers. We appreciate it SO much!

Much love!

Up, Up & Away! Stephen's B-day Celebration!

Stephen Joseph Hafen celebrated his #1 birthday today! He was full of joy! He loved seeing all the balloons and he especially loved eating his first piece of bday cake. I created a hot air ballon cake (no pattern), just inspired by an embroidery that Dad (yes, Grandpa) made years ago that I have hung in Stephen's room. I can see why many Mom's have given in to the Costco special cakes. Wow, Thanks Mom for spending all of that time in the kitchen for so many years creating special designs for us. I did enjoy the experience, but a lot of little things went wrong. I didn't have the right size coupler for the cake decorating tools, so I had to improvise on my frosting idea. Since I had to do that, I had a lot of gaps in my ballon, so I thought sprinkles would fill in the space nicely. Little did I know that when I shook the cute little sprinkle container that the lid would fly off and scatter sprinkles everywhere! I just had to laugh. The main thing is that the cake tasted delicious and Stephen enjoyed every bite. I think he definitely experienced a little sugar high, it was too cute! I'll post a few pictures tonight that I took and then I'll see what pictures Ray imports and share those as well.

Happy Birthday SONSHINE Stephen! I love you my little one.

Thanks for posting all of those pictures Mari, it was so good to look back at his first year of life. He has given me new life.
Like you wrote in your poem, he truly is an "angel boy."

love,
Kary

Angel Boy

Little angel sent from Heaven
Waiting long to take your place
Many years have passed by
All waiting to see your face

Now you’re here to show the world
And the Heavens too
Miracles still can happen
For a miracle are you

The sweetness in your smile
The glow within your eyes
How great a thing you have done
For someone small in size

You have brought new hope
Prayers were plead for you to come
Now you’re here we all know
The place where you came from

Such a gentle little soul
Sent down for this new day
You have come to show that faith
Can always find a way

Welcome baby, welcome here
You wonderful sweet joy
Welcome to this world Stephen
You little angel boy

We Are Getting Ready For A New Basketball Season

Hi Everyone(even Beth now yea!),
You all look great, we miss you so much. We are getting ready for another basketball season, it is going to be a good one. Kevin has his schedule set with the first game in November. His team picture is awsome. Everyone tells me I look too young to have a son in college, I tell them I had him when I was four years old. Bob is looking forward to our Suns season tickets our team is going to be good this year. Bob is also going fishing this weekend in Calif. - a "work thing" I will be staying here working on my new business. I am now a consultant for Scentsy. If you want your house smelling good all the time without the fire danger of burning candles check out my website www.scentsy.com/amyL- It is my favorite product. Kt is on the stage crew for the play at school and working at Z-coil shoe store, she is auditioning for the Easter Temple Pageant soon. Kim is working hard at the piano her new teacher is great. She is almost as tall as me and she loves to play basketball at school and beat the boys. Jim( who only answers to Kenneth now) just got new glasses that he wears all the time. His reading has improved and so has his PS2 and Wii scores.
If anyone can make it to St.George for Thanksgiving we will be there. Kevin has games on the Friday and Saturday.
Love ya,
Amy

Kary's Triumph

Kary pushing Stephen up a hill by Flat Top.

Here she is at the top with a look of triumph on her face.

A couple of summer pictures

Here are a couple of pictures of my wonderful summer. We had a great one here in Alaska. We had alot of sunshine, so we were able to do alot of things outside. In both of these pictures I was hanging out with Kary. The frist one was in August, when Kary and I went for a drive past Palmer. The second one was in June, when I went camping in Denali with Kary and Ray. Hope you enjoy. Love Bethanie

25 more life enlightening items from Kary

26. I loved riding on Mom's bike to kindgergarten. She put me in a basket and pedalled away to Cholla Elementary.
27. Rollerskating and playing bball in our backyard was super fun while growing up in Arizona.
28. I still shoot the bball w/ two hands. Occassionally, it goes in the hoop.; )
29. I remember having a cool playhouse in Arizona where my friends and I organized the 'bubble yum' club. You could only join if you could chew gum. Things gotta a little sticky now and then, but we loved trying all the different flavors and seeing who could blow the biggest bubbles.
30. I remember being super shy in Kindergarten, but things changed and now you can't get me to settle down. I LOVE life and I love people. I love teaching lessons, giving talks and motivational speaking.
31. I won a spelling bee in Juneau Alaska in 4th grade. I love spelling.
32. I won a free throw shooting contest in Juneau also........yes, two handed shots worked!
33. I love to dance many different styles. I loved taking jazz and swing dancing classes at byu.
34. My most favorite instructor at BYU was my volleyball teacher. Dr. McGown....he once was the olympic men's coach for the U.S. team and he is lives what he teaches. He taught me so much about positive feedback/reinforcement that has helped me to this day in teaching PE and other areas. Push ups were always a reward w/ him...not a punishment. so we learned to like push ups. amazing!
35. I did 38 push ups in a row in front of a 5th grade class at O'Malley a few years ago. They had all set personal physical goals w/ their classroom teacher and wanted me to join in. so, I set a goal to do 20 push ups w/out stopping. When performance day came, I was prepared. The students were so excited seeing Mrs. Hafen on all fours, they started to cheer...I was pumped up, so I kept going after I hit 20. Things started getting really hard for me at 30 in a row, so one student, a boy, came by my side, got on his hands and knees and started doing push ups w/ me. He cheered me on the rest of the way..saying: "you can do it Mrs. Hafen...keep going!" So, 38 felt great!
36. I miss my students occassionally, but I love being a professional Mom because I am still a TEACHER! Stephen is my #1 student so far. : )
37. I was a softball coach at Provo High School and took our team to state in St. George. The trip was super fun! When they asked me to be the coach, it was my first year of teaching. I was 24 yrs. old. I had never played fast pitch before, but I learned quick, got two great assistant coaches and away we went. I love hitting off a fast pitch machine! too cool!
38. In Junior HIgh, I crank called a girl that I wasn't too fond of. Her parents traced the # and got a hold of my parents...BUSTED big time! Mom and Dad had me go over to the girls house and apologize in person in front of everyone. I was totally embarrassed, but learned my lesson well. I can't believe I ever crank called someone. My neighbor friend had to go over there too because she was in on it. thank goodness for repentance and forgiveness...whew!
39. I got first place in a science fair in 5th grade. Mom helped me and a friend design a cool display and explanation of the planets. I am not that good at Science. But, I do know what ROYGBIV stand for: The colors of the rainbow..Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet....sounds good, I think!
40. I enjoy writing. Can you tell? It comes pretty naturally. I don't think too hard. I just start writing and hope it all makes sense. I did like English classes in school.
41. I'll always remember (when I was a freshmen) that my older brother Bob had his choir sing Happy Birthday to me from the stage in front of a huge audience. I felt like a million bucks. Thanks Bob!
42. I loved Field days in elementary school. I won a lot of blue ribbons. Being on the relay team was my favorite. I had the fastest girl in the whole school on my team and I loved to watch her sprint.
43. I never liked pull ups and still don't. I never required my students at O'Malley to do them. I just believe there are so many other ways to develop upper body strength and I never wanted to humiliate any of my students.
44. The track coach at Moon Valley High asked me to be on the cross country running team, I declined. I wish I would have been more involved in sports in High school. I just chose church sports instead.
45. Bethanie gave me the nickname "Kiki" when she was little and couldn't pronounce "Kary." I had that name on my softball uniform when I was a teenager.
46. I called my younger siblings "geeks" a lot while I was in HS. It was never intended to be a put down. It was just one of those cool words back in the day.
47. I was so happy the day Bethanie was born. I had always wanted more kids in our family. So, when I was 10....Mom and Dad were blessed with three more little geeks! : ) thank goodness they didn't all come at once.
48. I remember John would hide from us a lot when I would babysit. One day we couldn't find him anywhere. I was ready to call the police. Mari (at age 5 or 6) said: "Kary, we should say a prayer to find Johnny." So, I paused and we prayed. Right after the prayer, we knew to go downstairs one more time and look for John. Underneath a huge leopard skin fuzzy pillow we found a little 4 yr. old boy hiding and giggling. He was so proud we couldn't find him. All I could do was smile because I was so relieved he wasn't lost. I love you John!
49. Driving the Alaska Highway w/ the family when I was 16 was quite an adventure. We always stayed at the coolest places. There seemed to be a lot of ice cream along the way too.
50. when I was about 10 yrs. old, Dad bribed me w/ ice cream (this happened more than once in my growing up years)...He told me if I jumped off a 40ft high platform into a swimming pool, he'd buy me 5 gallons of Swenson's ice cream. I jumped!

The next 50 will come in the near future. I have to write when Stephen's napping. He's been a big napper today, can you tell? : )
Love you all!
Kary

Sage's surgery & fun w/ firewood : )

Ray and I finally decided to have Sage spayed. We had been considering breeding her even though we didn't get her for that purpose initially. We had her join our family to be a pet/companion/working dog and of course, Ray's best friend (next to Kary.) If we were going to breed her, we wanted to make sure she met the standard and find her a Berner with similar temperment, markings, etc. to be her mate. She's pretty small for a Bernese Mt. Dog which we feel will actually work in her/our favor as far as prolonging her life and causing less joint problems that this breed is prone to. We also wanted to keep one of her puppies if we did breed her so we could always have part of Sage w/ us when she crosses the Rainbow Bridge. If you own or have owned a pet, you must read the "Rainbow Bridge" to fill you in on meeting your pets after they pass on. Be prepared to cry. I'm sure you can google it or I'll add it another time. Anyway, now that we live in the valley and we don't have a fenced yard, it would be hard to keep other dogs away from her during her heat cycle (which is a pain to deal w/ anyway.) We just felt that the timing was right even though it was hard for us to do. She came home so sad yesterday. We had her rear dew claws removed too while she was under anesthetic, so she has bandages on her back legs and an incision on her belly that we have to prevent her from licking. We sure love her and can't wait to play w/ her again soon...10 days for healing. One picture is of Sage the day before surgery when we were out in the woods collecting wood and the day on her blanket is when she had her surgery done. Her coat is really shedding right now. she looks pretty skinny w/out her full coat. But, her winter coat will be thick and fluffy soon. Then, she can keep our feet warm.: )

Monday night, we went out to collect more firewood for our future fireplace and our outdoor firepit. We are trying to get prepared for winter. We definitely have a year supply of wood now. Ray loves to cut wood and haul it. I help w/ the hauling and it's fun to work together. Stephen was in his little stroller to watch us the other night. We told him he could help next year. He can't wait! Ray has even invested in a pair of carharts now for his work clothes (totally a valley dude thing!) but, I think they look good on him and now I call him "rugged Ray." You should see him w/ a chainsaw. I think he uses it for stress relief after a long day at work. All is well here. Remember to count your blessings today!

Stephen gets mail!

Yesterday Stephen received a fun birthday package in the mail from my friend Tessa. She always makes the cutest packages. I gave the package to Stephen while he was sitting in his high chair so he could look at it. I told him he couldn't open it until his birthday on Tuesday. He was pretty understanding. : ) He loved touching it and then dropping it on the floor. Aren't packages the best? Have you sent anyone a package lately? I promise you, it will make their day. It does not have to be spendy. Just use a big envelope and stuff it full of pictures or cards, stickers, poems, spiritual thoughts, whatever comes to your mind. You will make someone's day. Just try it. If a package seems like too much, send a card. When is the last time you thanked one of your school or church teachers for teaching you? Do you know how many teachers go unthanked for their service? Now, they have to have "teacher appreciation day" just to clue people in....so, anyway, I'm encouraging you to take time this week to write someone a thank you letter or card. The stamp you use to get it to them will be a priceless gift.

Love, Kary
